Finding a course

There are three types of courses that are located on the Surveyor Training website: Web-based Training, Videos, and Archived Webinars.

Web-based Training

All web-based training is found in the "Course Catalog" section of the website (for providers, this section is called "Web-based Training" and contains courses relevant to providers.) In this section is both legacy and SCORM courseware, such as the Basic Health Facility Surveyor and Principles of Documentation courses. Courses in the Course Catalog are listed in alphabetical order by course name.

Videos

All video courses are located in the "Webcasts" section of the website. In addition to all of the archived videos, this section will also list any upcoming videos that will be presented. Once a date and time has been selected for an upcoming video, it is possible for surveyors to pre-register for the event. Videos on the Webcasts page are ordered by broadcast date so that the most recent broadcasts are at the top of the list. It is possible to filter the list by year using the "Filter By: Date" box on the left of the page.

Webinars

Webinars are courses hosted by CMS. These courses are listed on Surveyor Training so that both surveyor and providers can easily find and access them. For surveyors to receive credit for watching these webinars, they must register and complete the evaluation that is located on ELMS.

Registering for a course

Only surveyors need to register for courses and videos. How you register for a course will depend upon the type of course.

Web-based Training

Most web-based training courses on Surveyor Training do not require a registration. These courses can be accessed directly from the Course Catalog. If the course requires a registration, there will be a registration link on the Class Information page. The Class Information page is accessible by clicking the course name on the Course Catalog page. By clicking the "Register for this course" link on the Class Information page, you will be registered automatically for the class. You will also receive an email indicating that you have registered for the class.

Videos

Surveyors must be registered for the video course in order to receive credit for watching it. To register for a video course, click the name of the video on the "Webcasts" page and click the "Register for this course" link on the Video Information page. You will also receive an email indicating that you have registered for the video course.

Webinars

For surveyors to receive credit for watching these webinars, they must register and complete the evaluation that is located on ELMS.

Instructor Led Training (ILT) Classroom Assessments

Some classroom assessments (pre-tests, posttests, and evaluations) are conducted on Surveyor Training. You are not able to register for these classes on Surveyor Training. All registrations for ILT classes is done on ELMS. The CMS Training Support Help Desk monitors the upcoming class schedule with the CMS Training Coordinators and makes sure that registration information is transferred from ELMS to Surveyor Training. You will receive emails from the CMS Training Support Help Desk for more information about taking these assessments. These courses will only appear on your "My Courses" page and are not accessible from the "Course Catalog."

Difference between a course and a class

On Surveyor Training, a course and a class often refer to the same training, but the terms are defined as follows:

Many of the courses on Surveyor Training, for example all of the video courses, have only one class associated with them. Registering for a video course essentially registers you for the only class that has been associated with that course. As an example, if you register for the video course "Overview of Anti-Psychotic Medication use in Nursing Homes", you are registering for the class with the Activity Code of "0CMSAPSYMEDUNH_Overview."

However, some courses on Surveyor Training have multiple classes associated with them. For example, The "Principles of Documentation for Non-Long Term Care" has a new class associated with it every three months. It is possible to be registered for different classes of the same course.
